Who Are We?
What kinds of tents are you looking for and where do I take them?
If we don't have a tent to donate can we donate money?
How are the tents getting there?
   Who are we?
On January 5 th 2010 53 Canadians from Ontario joined together to travel to the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti.
Sauble Christian Fellowship in Sauble Beach Ontario has been organizing mission trips to Haiti for approximately 6 yrs. For some it was the first time. For others it was an opportunity to return to ongoing projects to improve and develop two orphanages a clinic/ hospital and a school. An opportunity to rekindle friendships and strengthen bonds with our Haitian friends.
Suddenly our mission changed drastically. On January 12 at 4:53 pm the world watched as a 7.0 earthquake rocked the country of Haiti. We on the other hand were in the midst of the devastation hanging on for dear life to whatever was closest to us. Some were in the shower after a long hot day of heavy labor. Some of us were at the orphanage playing with the children. Some were preparing dinner, some were waiting for dinner. It was just time to wind down and relax.
Within seconds clouds of dust could be seen covering the countryside. Cries and screams could be heard rising from the villages. A team of us gathered and rushed down to the clinic. The next 33 hours we saw and experienced intense suffering and horrific trauma.
Five days after the earthquake we learned that we were being evacuated. This devastated some of us. The country was in ruin. It seemed as if everyone we knew was homeless. New friends, old friends, our translators, our sponsor children, the destitute villagers, the Head Doctors and nurses from the clinic, all were sleeping in the streets. We felt helpless.
So we are a group of people who have heart and passion for Haiti. The Haitian people are our friends they are our family.
Our desire is to get as many tents as possible to Haiti to provide shelter for the homeless. It wont be long before the raining season is upon this already devastated country. With over 2,000,000 homeless it is unpredictable when permanent housing will be available to the Haitian people.
So The Tent Project was born!
What kinds of tents are you looking for and where do I take them?
All kinds of tents are needed. All we ask is that you make sure your tent if it is used, is in good working order. No damage, zippers fully functioning. Think of how a family would feel who had lost everything received a tent that was damaged or missing pieces.
We are asking that the tent be packaged as tightly as possible with a label (regular sheet of printer paper) with the size of the tent..ex 2 man, 4 man, dining tent ect.. written in large black letters on the label taped onto it.
Ideally it would be placed in a garbage bag and taped up to protect it from any damage and labeled. We are working on a video to explain. Not that you need it. But its always fun to make videos. Just give me a reason.
We are in the process of setting up drop off locations, so if you could just have your tent ready we should have that figured out soon.
If we don't have a tent to donate can we donate money?
Of course you can! All donations will be given a tax receipt if made out to Sauble Christian Fellowship.
Just make sure that THE TENT PROJECT is clearly stated in the memo.
